Kenya: Nairobi County Govt to Spend Sh953 Million to Rehabilitate Roads

Posted on : Thursday , 24th September 2015

The Nairobi County government will spend Sh953 million on rehabilitating city roads.

Governor Evans Kidero said repair of roads was the next project after the rehabilitation of street lights in the county government's Nairobi Integrated Urban Development Master Plan.

Dr Kidero said the street lights project had seen crime levels drop from 1,200 incidents per month to 300.

He, however, said the project has been facing challenges due to vandalism.

"We take cognisance of the fact that vandalism is rampant especially in the upmarket estates such as Hurlingham, Kilimani, Woodley and various roads, including Ngong, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Dennis Pritt and Kirichwa.

"These are some of the roads worst hit by street light vandalism. We are spending a lot of money replacing equipment and this should not be the case," he said.

He said the county government had installed lights on 433 streets out of 783.

He also said that the county would install lights in Njiru, Ruai, Kayole and their environs to curb crime in the areas.

Dr Kidero said some of the key areas where the LED street lights have been installed are Muthaiga, Railway Station, Wakulima, Gikomba, Lusaka Road, CBD-Haile Selassie, Latema Road and Accra Road.
